The Gibbstown Public Library opened to the public in 1963, occupying a small room in the Gibbstown Public School. In October 1965, the library moved to what was formerly the Municipal Garage and remained there until 1983, when it moved to the Nehaunsey Middle School. The library became a branch of the Gloucester County Library System in January 1999. Construction on a new facility on Swedesboro Road commenced in the summer of 2002 on land donated to the township by the school district. The new library, with almost 10,000 square feet of floor space, opened in March 2003 and was dedicated on May 10, 2003. A construction grant in excess of $317,000 was received from the State of New Jersey to help finance the new building, which houses over 24,000 volumes and is open 56 hours per week, including four evenings and Saturdays. A grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation financed the purchase of sixteen computers and other equipment, enabling the library to feature a state-of-the-art technology training room. Two meeting rooms are available to community groups free of charge.
